Obituary

Shirley Mitchell Wilson, 90, passed away on October 8, 2024.  Born in Portsmouth, she has been a lifelong resident of Hampton Roads. Shirley was a renowned and widely acclaimed creative writer. Her early background included advertising copywriter, freelance writer for Georgia Educational TV, and audio-visual scripts for the US Government. Shirley received two Fellowships to the Virginia Center for Creative Arts.


The recognition of some of Shirley’s work includes - Winner of the 2020 Beverly HillsTheatre Guild/Julie Harris Playwright Award Competition; a finalist in the 2016Richmond International Film Festival for the screenplay, “Nobody Wants to be Last”;2013 Radio Play aired on 111 Public Radio Stations across the United States; 2009Moondance International Film Festival – Best Feature Screenplay Award; 2006Moondance International Film Festival – Screenplay Finalist; and Winner of the 1993Virginia Governor’s Screenwriting Competition. Shirley also created multiple plays that were staged and stories that were published, including a film option for a short story published in Redbook.


Shirley is survived by her daughters Laurie Wilson Fore, and Leslie Wilson Doss.


Laurie and Leslie remember Shirley as always loving and kind. She was a mom whoenjoyed spending time with family and friends. They fondly remember and treasure their beach vacations and the fun they all had together. Shirley was an inspiration, teaching Laurie and Leslie to live their lives with enthusiasm, as she did. They take comfort in knowing that she lives on in all of their happy memories.
